HKIA SkyBridge will let you watch an A380 pass underneath

In Mid-2020 HKIA will open a 28m high sky bridge between T1 and the north satellite.

It is 200m wide which means an A380 could pass under it, and you’ll be able to watch through the glass floors on each side of the bridge.

It will be open 24 hours and have observation decks with catering outlets at both ends of the bridge.

Qatar Airways adds 8 destinations

Worth looking out for good sale fares in business class on these new routes including Siem Reap. Cebu in the Philippines is home to this amazingly cheap private island escape.

Almaty in Kazakhstan is almost certainly not on your holiday destination list and yet it is a brilliant place with a mountain backdrop and that good old post-Soviet charm. When I passed through Almaty on my motorcycle, someone pinched my GPS, but we’ll gloss over that.

  • Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan – Two weekly flights (starting 30 March 2020)
  • Almaty, Kazakhstan – Two weekly flights starting 1 April 2020, increasing to four weekly flights from 25 May 2020
  • Cebu, Philippines – Three weekly flights (starting 8 April 2020)
  • Accra, Ghana – Daily flights (starting 15 April 2020)
  • Trabzon, Turkey – Three weekly flights (starting 20 May 2020)
  • Lyon, France – Five weekly flights (starting 23 June 2020)
  • Luanda, Angola – Four weekly flights (starting 14 October 2020)
  • Siem Reap, Cambodia – Five weekly flights (starting 16 November 2020)

Qatar Airways launches a codeshare with Deutsche Bahn Rail

Is this a first? It’s the first flight & rail codeshare agreement I know of.

A codeshare with Deutsche Bahn will provide Qatar Airways passengers with connections to eight key cities within DB network like Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Hannover, Leipzig, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Munich, and Hamburg via Qatar Airways’ Frankfurt gateway in Germany

Qatar Airways introduces saver awards

For lightly loaded and off-peak flights, Qatar will be introducing lower rate “saver” fares for Privilege Club members. They are also looking at introducing cash+miles. This is being led by Dan Martin who came to Privilege Club from Avios.

I doubt that saver awards will be available to oneworld partners, but with Qatar business class sales and point bonuses some people do build up reasonable points balances.

Maybe this is the start of reversing the negative changes in the past few years that made QR awards more expensive and harder to find.
