If you just can’t wait and want a 2 minute video tutorial, go to the bottom of the page.

This isn’t a Photoshop tutorial. If you knew how to use Photoshop you wouldn’t be here. This is for people who don’t want to spend months learning how to use Photoshop (the learning curve is very steep) and for people who don’t want to spend hundreds of pounds on software, and be locked into monthly subscriptions that add up to hundreds and hundreds and hundreds.

I won’t waste your time – This tutorial requires an excellent piece of Software called Luminar.

You can currently buy Luminar for just £89.

How to remove objects from photos with Luminar

Alright, let’s get straight into it. There’ll be more articles coming up soon where I’ll show you how to do the photo enhancements like the ones above, but today, we’re erasing unwanted objects from photos.

We’ll start with an easy one, to show you how it works. Here’s a photo from a long time ago with an annoying timestamp in the way.

photo with timestamp

Open the image in Luminar, and choose Edit > Canvas > Erase

(or press Command + E on a Mac, Ctrl + E on Windows)

You can now draw over the part you want to remove. By default, we are in pen mode, but this timestamp is a simple rectangle shape, so instead click “Lasso” on the toolbar and click 4 corners of the area you want to remove.

Your last click will join the shape together and you’ll have a nice red rectangle. Here are those three steps in order – The pen tool, the lasso tool in progress, and the lasso tool completed.

Now click “Done”. Here is the result. Can you see any trace of the timestamp?

It’s that easy. It took less than 60 seconds. Don’t believe me? There’s a video at the end of this article.

How to remove a person from a photo with Luminar

Before

OK, this one. Let’s get rid of that person in white, right between the Moai, and the head of her friend just appearing. Exactly the same procedure as before.

  1. Press Command + E or Ctrl + E to enter erase mode
  2. Use the pen, or switch to the lasso for straight lines, and select the area
    1. When working with small areas, it helps if you zoom in first
    2. In this case I used the pen and the lasso
  3. Click Done
  4. Bingo

After

Not a trace. It took one minute.

That was an easy one. Let’s do something harder.

In this photo, let’s get rid of the person on the left. It will make the composition a bit more balanced.

Surely you can’t just chop a whole person out of photo like that? Yes, actually, you can. In 60 seconds.

Go into Erase mode, select lasso, click around the area, done. 1,2,3. A,B,C. Easy peasy.

Here’s an even harder one. Can we possibly remove this girl from the bridge?

Well, to some extent, yes. Erase mode, lasso, select area, done.

There is a little bit of distortion in the wall and the rails where the erase happened, but if you’re putting the photo on a blog page nobody will notice. If you want to clean it up, you just use the Clone & Stamp tool. We’ll show you that in another tutorial.

Here’s a video showing how to erase people or timestamps or anything else from photos, using Luminar.
